About the Culinary Institute of Virginia

The Culinary Institute of Virginia is part of ECPI College of Technology. With a 40-year tradition of excellence in collegiate educational programming, ECPI and the Culinary Institute of Virginia opened the doors the Norfolk, VA campus in 2006.

Culinary Arts Students in Norfolk, VirginiaIf you are thinking of working in Virginia in the culinary, tourism or hospitality industry, the Culinary Institute of Virginia will be training the "chefs of the future." The school has a great relationship with area restaurants and hotels, providing trained cooks with a skills based program that focuses on work experience.

The Culinary Institute of Virginia is being advised by the New England Culinary Institute, one of the top 25 culinary programs in the country. Named Best Cooking School by the International Association of Culinary Professionals in 2004, NECI was founded in Vermont in 1980. The school specializes in a "learn by doing" model, and hands-on education is a focus of this great school.

Culinary Science - Associate of Science

An Associate of Applied Science course of study, the Culinary Science program at the Culinary Institute of Virginia can be completed in as little as 72 weeks. In addition, flexible scheduling is geared towards helping students work while they attend school. Along these lines, classes are available during the day, in addition to night, online, and weekend classes.  As part of the Culinary Science program, students also participate in a paid externship at a local food service facility.

Coursework is hands-on, and combines classroom and laboratory learning environments. Students will learn about table and beverage service, culinary techniques, baking and pastry arts, culinary methods, food theory, culinary science, kitchen and storeroom management, front of house procedures, and the responsibilities of a Garde manager. The Culinary Science program features small class sizes that focus on classical, regional, and international cuisines.

Financial Aid

A fully accredited institute, The Culinary Institute of Virginia participates in state and federal financial aid programs. Students should complete a FAFSA form, and contact the Financial Aid Office with any questions or concerns.

ECPI and The Culinary Institute of Virginia are accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Faculty

Equipped with a faculty that is full of industry professionals, the staff at the Culinary Institute of Virginia are well-versed in regional, American, and international cuisine. In addition to teaching in a hands-on environment, the faculty at the Culinary Institute of Virginia also work closely with the area restaurants, hotels, and other businesses to provide relevant career training for all students.

Facilities

Located at 2428 Almeda Avenue in the heart of Norfolk, the Culinary Institute of Virginia underwent a multimillion dollar facelift in 2006. As a result, the Norfolk campus is equipped with modern kitchens and equipment, all of which meet industry-standards. Student housing is available at the Norfolk campus.

Norfolk is an independent city in Hampton Roads, a harbor on Chesapeake Bay. It’s home to the largest naval base in the world, Norfolk Naval Base and is the regional educational, medical, business, financial and cultural center.
